The Malay Mail (TMM) is a newspaper in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, first published in December 1896 when KL was the capital of the then new Federated Malay States, making it the first daily to appear in the FMS. In September 2009, The Malay Mail moved out from the media flagship Media Prima and NSTP and became part of the Redberry Media Group as the nation’s only free English afternoon newspaper which carries tomorrow’s headlines today.
TMM has always prided itself on being Klang Valley's 'community paper'. What does that mean? It means MM champions the regular folk, when they don't have the voice to fight their cause. It plays the role of a watchdog, keeping a close eye on those in power and entrusted with the welfare of others. Offering balanced reporting,it does not patronise the readers by telling them what to believe -- it presents all sides of a story, with indepth analyses,to help each reader make their own informed decision.
TMM also does not just plainly report happenings. Off-centre but slightly to the left,it dives deeper to uncover the human face of each story. It believes that beyond anything that happens every day, from events to announcements, what's more important is how it affects the regular man (or woman) on the street. More than just facts and figures,TMM knows that readers want to know how their lives are affected and would relate more to how other regular people like them deal with what happens.
The paper is trustworthy and provocative, preferring to call a spade a spade. If something needs to be told, and people need to know,TMM will not sugarcoat the facts. However,it isn't about sensationalism or malice -- TMM places the utmost importance on ethical journalism, keeping its approach to each story fair and balanced.
